In the recent past, a War occurred against the Eggman Empire, in which the Resistance battled to take back the vast majority of the world that had been taken over Dr. Eggman. The war was fought for a long six months by various heroes, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, who helped to turn the tide in battle and ultimately win the war roughly one month prior to Neo Metal Sonic’s takeover of Angel Island.
History[]
During Sonic's Imprisonment[]
Near the beginning of the war, Dr. Eggman had successfully captured Sonic and imprisoned him in a cell in space, giving Eggman the chance to conquer the world with ease. Sonic's allies had formed a rag-tag army in order to continue to fight without him. This army was called the Resistance, and with Knuckles the Echidna as its commander, they began to push back the Eggman Empire and slowly free the world from his rule. (StH: #1, #3, #4)
Sometime after Sonic was captured, Miles "Tails" Prower had invented a means to translate the language of the Wisps before disappearing. As a result, the Resistance was able to ask the Wisps that settled onto the planet for help in fighting against Dr. Eggman, to which they happily agreed and even allowed themselves to wait in Deployment Pods on the battlefield until Resistance troops entered the area and used their help. At some point during the war, Silver the Hedgehog traveled from his future, a polluted nightmare where the Eggman Empire ruled and everyone lived in fear. As a result, he also joined the Resistance. (StH: #8)

As the war progressed, various villages around the world would be harassed by Dr. Eggman's Badnik army. Some of these villages would turn their buildings into bunkers as defenses while others survived thanks to their fortifications. (StH: #2, #3)
During the period where Sonic remained imprisoned, Whisper the Wolf mysteriously aided multiple units in the Resistance and managed to turn the tide of battle. Silver was one of the Resistance soldiers that she had saved multiple times. Despite her alignment, she never joined the Resistance's army. Because of her mysterious nature on the battlefield and saving of various soldiers, she was known among the Resistance as "Guardian Angel". (StH: #8)
Before Sonic was freed from his imprisonment, a particular soldier joined the Resistance during its efforts to reclaim the planet from the Eggman Empire's reign.[1][2] (StH: #1)
After Sonic's Escape[]
Six months after his imprisonment, Sonic was freed by his friends and joined the Resistance. During this time, the particular soldier met Sonic the Hedgehog, who came to know them well enough to acknowledge how they put a Cube Wispon "to good use".[1][2] With the final battle for the outcome of the War approaching, Eggman began the process of upgrading Metal Sonic into Neo Metal Sonic, who was to be the doctor's greatest weapon for the inevitable confrontation. As an added bonus, Eggman gave Neo Metal Sonic his bio-data in the form of his vision, genius, and ambition. In the meantime, Eggman had phantoms of Metal Sonic fight in the robot's stead. However, Metal Sonic's upgrade would not be finished in until after the war ended. (StH: #1, #2, #4, #8)

Shortly before the war ended, the mercenaries Rough the Skunk and Tumble the Skunk saved Barricade Town from Eggman's forces. However, they soon after tricked the residents into letting them into their town, which they then took over for themselves. With Badniks continuing to stalk the town from the outside, the residents were trapped in their town and forced to obey Rough and Tumble. (StH: #3)

Eventually, Sonic and his allies confronted Dr. Eggman at his Eggman Empire Fortress. At the climax of that confrontation, Sonic faced off against Dr. Eggman and his Death Egg Robot. In the end, Sonic and the Resistance won, defeated Dr. Eggman, and broke the Eggman Empire's control over their world. (StH: #1, #4)
The Fallout from the War[]

After Dr. Eggman's defeat at the end of the war, the doctor vanished. However, efforts were made to find him and have him stand trial for his crimes. Additionally, Eggman's disappearance meant that his now leaderless Badnik army, which was scattered throughout the world during the war, would continue wandering aimlessly and attack anything it came across, although these attacks seemed to be more accidental than aggression based. (StH: #1, #2, #5)
Despite the war having ended, the world was left in a terrible mess from it and Dr. Eggman. As such, the resistance set out to restore the world to how it was before the war. With the unexpectedly large and directionless Badnik army getting in the way however, the Resistance began working to finish the fight more effectively by operating from a more centralized, organized position. With the war over, however, many Resistance members left the organization, including Sonic the Hedgehog. (StH: #2, #3)
Neo Metal Sonic awakens too late.
Eventually, Metal Sonic's upgrade into Neo Metal Sonic finished. Learning of the outcome of the War, Neo Metal Sonic took control of the Eggman Empire in order to ensure its reign would remain unbroken. Neo Metal Sonic then began plotting to reconquer the world in Dr. Eggman's likeness using his shapeshifting abilities and find his creator so that Eggman could reassume his position as ruler of the Eggman Empire without anyone being the wiser. Approximately a month after the War had ended, Neo Metal Sonic began making his move by taking control of the wayward Badnik army, which he directed into a series of attacks on different villages. This prompted Sonic to travel around and stop the Badnik attacks with the aid of old and new allies. Soon after, Neo Metal Sonic launched a takeover of Angel Island and its Master Emerald, but was defeated by Sonic and the Resistance. (StH: #1, #2, #3, #4, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11)
