The Sungazers were anthropomorphic horned-lizards that were native to the Northstar Islands. The most notable individual was Trip the Sungazer, who served as the Guardian of the island and the residing Black Onyx.

During the events of Sonic Superstars, the tribe hid themselves away on Trip's orders, making everyone believe that Trip was the only one of her kind. After joining with Sonic and his friends against Eggman and Fang, the tribe left their hiding place and went back to their village on the island.
Knuckles’ 30th Anniversary[]
By the time that Knuckles returned to the Northstar island, he found island inhabited by many Sungazers, besides Trip. Trip explained to a surprised Knuckles that she told them to hide when Doctor Eggman and Fang came
