Motobud is a Moto Bug Badnik that was fixed by Dr. Eggman while he had amnesia and took on the kind persona of Mr. Tinker. The robot was reprogrammed with a friendlier personality.

History[]

Past[]

The robot that would be later dubbed "Motobud" was initially a regular Moto Bug. When Dr. Starline first recovered Eggman, it was lying in a state of disrepair in the Final Egg. As part of Starline's attempt to restore Eggman's memories, he tasked the amnesiac doctor to restore the wrecked Badniks to their functioning selves. However, as Mr. Tinker, he repaired them, but turned them into beneficial robots rather than tools of conquest.(StH: #12)

While it appeared to Starline that Mr. Tinker wasn't responding to his treatments, the kindly repairman feared that it was only a matter of time until the platypus succeeded in turning him back into his old, evil self. Believing that he had no way of altering this fate, he fixed and reprogrammed a Moto Bug and gave it a hand-written note for his robot daughter Belle, who remained in Windmill Village. The little robot was then sent on its way to find Belle, though apparently got lost somewhere along the way.

Trial by Fire[]

At some point, the Moto Bug that was reprogrammed by Mr. Tinker found its way to the Forest Ridge Zone Campground‎. There, it began to trim topiaries to resemble Sonic the Hedgehog. When Amy Rose, Jewel the Beetle, Tangle the Lemur and Belle visited the campground, Belle left the campsite and went walking in the woods by herself. She came across the trimmed topiaries and encountered the Moto Bug as it burst out of the bushes and bumped into her, knocking her out.(StH: #45)

When Belle came back online a short time later, she discovered that the forest was on fire. The wood plating on her hand had also burned away, causing her to think that she had accidentally started the fire with her finger lighter. The Moto Bug came up to her and then revved its wheel, scattering dirt over Belle's hand to fully extinguish the embers. Belle also noticed tracks in the dirt, realising that the Moto Bug had pulled her away from the flames.

Tangle soon turned up to find Belle and was startled by the Moto Bug's presence, but Belle assured her that the robot wasn't dangerous. With the flames and smoke intensifying, the trio made their way towards safer ground, approaching a ravine, on the other side of which was the park ranger's son Ashe and his pet Wisp. The girls got onto Motobud's back and rode him to the edge of the cliff, with Belle using her tail-kick function to allow them to jump the gap and Tangle using her tail to grab a rock to pull them over to reach Ashe and Red Hot.

As the group tried to find a route back to the campground, a burning tree suddenly fell and Tangle, Belle and Ashe almost fell into the ravine. The weight of the fallen tree caused the cliff edge to crumble, causing the girls, Ashe and Motobud to fall. (StH: #46) Plunging into the stream below, Tangle used her tail to save the others, pulling them onto the fallen log. Motobud clung to the end of Tangle's tail as they drifted down the rapids until ending up back at the campgrounds where Amy and Jewel were busy trying to keep the fires from overrunning the camp. Belle and Motobud would help with evacuating the campers, with Belle riding on Motobud's back and pulling people out of danger.

After saving the campground, the girls would return to Tails' workshop with Motobud in tow. Tails was impressed by Motobud's behaviour and wondered if it was possible to reprogram other Badniks to behave the same way. (StH: #47)

Wound Up[]

Some time after the Forest Ridge fire, Tails and Belle had rounded up several Badniks in order to reprogram them. After copying Motobud's nonaggression subroutines to them, they managed to make the robots more docile. For the final test, they brought Sonic in to help, knowing that all Badniks are normally programmed to attack him on sight. The Badniks took no notice of Sonic and just played in the garden outside of Tails' workshop. This gave Belle hope that they could liberate more Badniks from Eggman's control on a larger scale.

That night, both Belle and Motobud became enthralled by a mysterious signal summoning them to an unknown location. Sonic woke up to find Motobud scratching at the door, trying to get out. When he checked on Motobud to see what was wrong, the robot attacked him. Belle then entered the room and attacked as well, seeing Sonic and Tails as an obstruction. Tails was able to bring Belle back to her senses by planting a Zeti Zapper on her back. She then revealed to him and Sonic that Eggman was summoning every Badnik across the globe somewhere. With Motobud still being affected by the signal, the trio decided to follow him and find out where he was going.

Sonic, Tails and Belle followed Motobud south, encountering many other Badniks that were also under the effect of the mysterious signal. Tails flew ahead to a clearing and saw a hi-tech urban sprawl ahead of him, with a great tower in its center. In order to stop Motobud going any further, Belle used her tools to open up the robot's chassis and cut his main power circuit, taking him offline. Inside the chassis, Belle discovered the note that Mr. Tinker had written for her. After reading the note, she, Sonic and Tails continued on towards the city, leaving the inactive Motobud behind.(#49)

Appearance[]

As a mass-produced Badnik model, Motobud has the exact same appearance as the rest of the Moto Bug line of Badniks. During the Forest Ridge Zone fire, he lost one of his antenna, which was later replaced with a white flower.

Personality[]

The "Good" Moto Bug happy that he helped Belle

Originally, Motobud would have been like any other Badnik: a silent drone programmed to follow Dr. Eggman's commands. After being reprogrammed by Mr. Tinker, it has become independent, non-aggressive and friendly. It tried to save Belle from a forest fire when they first met and has since been nothing but friendly and helpful to Belle and her other friends. It also seems to enjoy decorative gardening, using its claws to cut shrubs into topiaries.
